At the 2006 Census Merrimac had a population of 5,690. It is located on the floodplains in the central region of the Gold Coast. The community takes its name from one of two possible sources: the Merrimac River in New England (U.S.) or the USS Merrimac, a Union navy frigate which is itself named after the river.

There are several schools connected to the suburb, including; Merrimac State Primary School, Merrimac State High School, St Michaels College, All Saints Anglican School and King Solomon College.

It is classed as a residential suburb and is situated between Robina Parkway in the east and the M1 Motorway in the west. This is a reasonably new suburb and is popular among families looking to buy their own homes. Its proximity to all the city’s major attractions has ensured it has become popular and there is significant demand in the area.

The houses in Merrimac range from town houses to executive-styled villas and family homes, and there are a few opportunities for golf course frontage.

There are a number of major shopping centres in the suburbs surrounding Merrimac, including the Robina Town Centre and the Q Super Centre.
